About ARCappella
ARC's choir first appeared at the Darebin Festival, Edwards Lake Family Day in 1997. It officially became ARCappella - the four part a cappella unaccompanied choir of ARC in 2000. Community choirs and the benefits of community singing have become popular around Melbourne over the past few years, because they provide a non traditional recreational activity and allow individuals to feel part of something bigger; and connected to their local environment, promoting a sense of health and well-being.
ARCappella is renowned for its diverse repertoire that includes everything from the Beatles, African spirituals, to pop songs & musical numbers and of course Christmas carols (and we're always open for new repertoire suggestions!). The only rule is it must be a cappella. Our performances range from community events such as music festivals and eisteddfods, to wineries, aged care facilities, weddings, birthdays and a range of Christmas events.
Objectives of ARCappella
- To encourage and develop the vocal talent of people in Darebin
- To achieve a high level of expertise within the choir, promoting self esteem and self worth amongst its members
- To perform at community festivals and other occasions and participate as part of the community.
Chances are you haven't been at a Darebin festival or cultural event over the past 10 years, if you haven't enjoyed an ARCappella performance. ARCappella has provided a platform for not only young people to show off their vocal talents, but about community spirit and participation. ARCappella members are volunteers and a significant number have been singing with the choir since joining ARC as a teenager or young adult, growing up in this group, which now features singers of all ages.
In 2009, ARCappella was awarded with the city of Darebin Australia Day Award for its contribution to the Darebin Community.
